I did the marathon and despite not having done enough training I really enjoyed the race. Race entry was easy and organisers kept you updated throughout with regular emails and tweets. On the day starting in Kew Gardens was lovely and after a quick bag check and well marshalled walk to the start area I experienced a race first - no queue for the ladies toilets!
The race got off promptly with a simple split of waves between sub/ over 4 hours. There were pacers but despite their bright t-shirts they were difficult to spot due to no flags/ balloons.
The first three miles are all in Kew Gardens which was really nice as spectators and half marathon runners were all there to cheer you on. There were also characters in costume who were great and were still going strong 4 hours later at the finish line.
On leaving Kew the race goes onto the towpath which was well signed and where needed (e.g. At turns) well marshalled. I found some of the towpath hard going particularly where it was rough under foot with roots and gravel - thankfully I'd strapped my feet up or there would have been blisters galore! There was almost no support or marshals miles 3-8 due to the logistics of the course which didn't bother me as it was really pretty and lots to see but might not be to everyone's liking and I noticed lots of people with earphones. But where the course opened out there was good enthusiastic supporters and marshals - the charity support was particularly vocal and encouraging. I also enjoyed Henry VIII doling out high 5s at Hampton Court Palace.
The water / energy stops seemed well organised and again were enthusiastic and supportive though due to course logistics weren't quite evenly spaced which would have thrown me if I hadn't looked at the route beforehand.
The last 500m were on grass in Old DeerPark which seemed very cruel on my tired legs but it did mean there were loads of people cheering you on at the end.
The goodie bags were decent and included a free pint which was appreciated and the t-shirt was a proper small ladies size which is extremely rare. I also loved the chunky medal which had a unique design. Baggage pick up was seem less too.
I enjoyed the finish line atmosphere and post race entertainment which meant there was plenty going on to keep everyone happy. My mum did the half and was similarly impressed.
Overall I thought this was a unique, well organised race which was good value for money and I would definitely do it again.
