← Winchester 10k Road Race

My second year in succession at this race and once again I enjoyed it - despite the hills (and the added wind factor!).

With the horrendous weather leading up to the event the organisers had to alter the final stage of this race and the placing of the finish line due to floods.

It was a bit of a bottleneck at the end, not helped by runners failing to move forward as requested. I managed to push over the timing mat to ensure my correct time.

But the changes were detailed to runners in a video link on Facebook where you could keep up to date with things as they changed. Emails were also send out so that people knew what was happening.

Despite a record entry the start (delayed ten minutes) went off pretty smoothly with runners then making their way from the Guildhall, out of the city and then into the countryside before coming back into town to finish at the Leisure Centre.

A mixture of town, country, flat, and hills, all on closed roads. On one stretch you are running down the left side of a wide main road with cars still coming up the other side - but there is plenty of room and their were marshals at regular intervals plus bike riders making sure you stay well away from the traffic.

Side roads had marshals stationed at their exits and the whole event felt safe. There is a drink station at the half way point.

Despite the conditions I once again enjoyed this race, even the testing hills - especially knowing that once I'd passed the two around the 7-8k mark it was mostly downhill to the finish line.

A nice medal, lovely shirt and pretty well stocked goodie bag at the end for a decent entry price.

The finish line still needs a bit of work but knowing organisers Challenging Events listen to what competitors say they are certain to be looking at that for next year. I'll be back.
