← Yorkshire 10 Mile

An early start for me for this race, with a 1 hour 40 drive to get to Elvington Airfield, where I was to catch the bus to Your University and the race start.  Parking was plentiful, easy and well-marshalled and the bus service efficient and quick with very little waiting - a good option.  The race village was pretty much standard for this sort of event. Queues for toilets were expected, but not ridiculously long. The marathon was starting at 9.30 and the 10 mile at 10.15, so the area was packed before 9.30, but thinned out a bit once the marathon had got underway.  University facilities meant breakfast options and tea/coffee were readily available.  The 10 mile race itself started about 100 yards after the start gantry, which caused a little confusion until we worked out what was going on.  The route itself makes its way through the city and past the Minster in the early stages - being in the first mile or two meant that this narrower section was quite crowded and there was a little barging.  After that it makes its way out into the countryside, before splitting with the marathon course and looping back to the finish. Support was good throughout but, not unexpectedly, a little sparser in the countryside.  A very nice finishers' t-shirt and medal was provided at the end, along with water, protein bar and a small bar of chocolate. A few other freebies were available for those that wanted them. Again, I find myself writing the same negative that I seem to be doing on the Run for All events I've done this year.  Why oh why do they use Marathon Photos for their race photography? Limited locations on the course, ridiculously expensive (almost the same as race entry cost for the photos) and not the best quality pictures either, means I do not have a single photograph from any of my Run for All events this year.  That is disappointing when so many other races manage to find a better solution.  For an event of this size it really isn't good enough.  Overall, this is a decent enough event, but is it worth a drive of over an hour and a half to do? No it isn't and I doubt I will do it again.
