← Great Newham London Run

This was the first time I have run this race and was very excited to have the opportunity to run around the olympic track to finish in the stadium. It was a very warm day, high 20s and as I am a slow runner I was in the last wave at 10.55, which was just gone 11 by the time we crossed the start line after high fiving Olympic star Christine Ohuruogu. We started running and there is no getting round the start of the race is always busy but it was flowing fine and people were in good spirits. There were water stations at 2-3km and 5-6km and a shower in between them. However the downside was there was no more water stations after this and in the midday sun you could see people flagging all around causing all of us to walk sections. This needs addressing!

Dont let people fool you that it is a flat couse - it isnt! with manmade flyovers and ramps everywhere challenging you. Be prepared.

Lastly, not all of the route is in the olympic park with some of it being the back of an industrial estate and I think it would work better as 2 x 5k laps. Yes this would make it more crowded and would have to be planned more but would make water stations easier throughout and would make the scenery more attractive and distracting.

Getting towards the end you run under the stadium to the Super Saturday music and commentry which is really inspiring. But the best bit of the race and the one reason I signed up was for the run into the stadium, onto the track and enjoying that bouncy track run for 300m, running in the footsteps of those amazing Olympians.

I am pleased I finished it (especially in that heat) but it wouldnt be one I would return to.
