Whaley Waltz is part of the village carnival in Whaley Bridge. Despite wanting to run it for a number of years 2019 was the first time I managed to get along.

Unlike many fell races the event could be pre-registered (most are on the day entries) although they had about 70 places available for those turning up for the race unregistered.

Slight delay to the start of the race which can only start once the carnival parade has gone through the village centre. Then it's off along the main road before turning off and picking up the trails.

The race is rated BS in fell running terms. On an ordinary June day in the High Peak, it wouldn't be a problem, but as the mercury was touching 30 degrees celcius, it made for a very hot race, especially during the climb onto Taxal Edge. Two water stops were added during the climb section which was a very good call - it was hot!

The descent was on well worn trails and would have been fast had it not been so warm!

The bit that makes the Waltz special is the "deep" river crossing moments before the end. It's where most of the spectators gravitate to watch runners hurling themselves into the river. There were spot prizes awarded for best river entry! It was only about 4' deep in 2019 but that was plenty deep enough to try to cool off a bit before the final 200m dash to the finish.

Water at the end as well as medical support (both for observing the river crossing and for looking after the finishers.

Really enjoyed it, but the heat made for a tough run!
