· 2019 Half Marathon ·

My second year running the half marathon and I was delighted to once again be the official 2hr pacer for Xempo. As well as the half marathon there is a 5km and junior run so a real family event. The event village is excellent with activities, food/drink and a large British Airways tent with prizes and competitions to enter. Both years this has been a brilliant #visorclub meet up and it was lovely to see so many Racecheck people before, during and after the race including the Captain herself. The start area is in corals based on predicted finish times, you are then filtered through to the start line. One issue we had was crossing the finish line to get to the start, lots of runners around us started their watches thinking it was the start only to turn the corner and be met by the actual start line. A small point but definitely confusing. The course itself starts and finishes at the event village and takes in a large rural route with a long stretch running alongside the runway at Gatwick. Pretty cool when the planes are landing right over you. Crowds are ok on the course and much busier around the finish area. Only 3 water stations from memory on what was quite a warm day but hundreds of marshals doing a great job on a well marked course. I did notice that from mile 2 the course markers were quite a bit off which made pacing a little tricky. I think the course could be tweaked a little bit so that the actual finish line is closer to the centre stage and event village. We had a great group running with us this year and I was delighted to finish in 1.59.49 helping lots of runners break 2hrs and hit their targets. Finishers medal and technical t-shirt are both great designs and of high quality. Overall I enjoy the event will definitely plan to be back pacing again in 2020.
