← Shrewsbury Half Marathon

My first 1/2 Marathon race in over a year and I was talked into doing this one by the ukrunchat commuity.  The profile looked tough but I was advised it was just a little "Undulating" :)

Well that was an understatement.  The course was a lovely route, through the heart of shrewsbury which is lovely town.  A few big hills with a few drops to make up for it but as its nice and early it wasnt to bad.  After mile 7 it heads back into the countryside.  I am not sure if it was to do with the fact the first half was mixed but it felt like the last 6 miles was a constant gradual incline.  It hurt but I got through without stopping.

I was aiming for a 2.15 but I came in at 39 seconds over 2 hours.  Part of me is gutted I didnt sub 2 with being that close but then I felt happy I managed to get round a tough course.

The day itself was very well organised.  It felt like a race put together for runners by runners.  People were very friendly and the atmosphere throughout was great.  Was fantastic to meet a lot of people/companies that I knew from chatting online.

Race goody bag was ok, small but nice medal, nice tech t-shirt, I think I could have done with a sports drink at the end instead of water but that a minor gripe.  Loved the peanut butter but maybe a bit of chocolate next time? Instead of a sports drink I nipped over to the nuffield health stand and got a smoothie.

Thanks to all that put this event together.  I would come back and do it again!

Hi Phillip. Don't be too hard on yourself with the 39 seconds, its a tough course so you did great. I did go for chocolate initially bit i was worried about it melting with race being in June so opted for the Jelly tots and crisps. I have added sports drink to my list for 2017 and will see what i can do. Joe - UKSportsChat
