← Greenwich Park 5K and 10K MoRun

This was my 6th Mo Run at Greenwich Park and an event that’s as much a consistent in my calendar than the disappointment that my least favourite Millwall player is assigned to my birthday month. This year, along with my two boys we also had my Godson, Zach who was joining the mini-mo run for this year’s event. We made our way to the branded gazebos and with ease picked up our race numbers and safety pins. The children’s race started half an hour before mine so i found the time to watch the three future visor-club members smash their 1.5k race and get their medals. Just before 10:00 and just after the group warm-up had finished, I made my way to the start line and was ready to go. The Mo Run at Greenwich is special in the sense that although the race is held in the same location at the same time every year, they change the course round so one year you could have plenty of hills to run up and down and others it feels a bit flatter. This year, unfortunately, was the former and we started the race running in the opposite direction then we had for the few years before. As the race started I flew out of the traps and was up near the leader for the first few km’s. The first downhill early on was nice and I flew down it with relative ease, but after this first downhill was out the way then the battle started. As mentioned before, although this seemed to have more uphills than previously, I was still enjoying the race and hit the half way mark just under 19:30. This was a good split but I knew it would be ridiculously tough to maintain this and get round in the sub-40 minute mark I aim for with the 10k distance. I have got round this course only twice in under 40 minutes in the six years I’ve been doing this race and I felt that this year I would not be able to. The second lap was tough, but the support from the fantastic marshals and the Avery fan club (without my Dad and Uncle Tony this time) spurred me on and after a few more climbs I made my way towards the finish line. My running app told me that I had hit the six mile mark in just under 40 mins, but the long and steep hills had taken its toll on me and I crossed the finish line just under 41 minutes. It was a time I was a little disappointed with, but the 15th place finish I had overall was a nice consolation prize. Would I do the Mo Run again? Of course! It’s tradition and although it was a chilly morning running up and down hills, it was another great morning and one I strongly recommend to anyone who wants to try and take on the 10k distance. Plus you get a free sweat band and Yazoo. What’s there not to enjoy?!
