** I will get the negative out of the way first and then I can get on with the review. Starting pens were non-existent, with slower runners mixed in with the faster runners. It was chaotic and a bit of a free-for-all. It needs looking at. English Half Marathon is one of my favorite half marathons and believe me, I have done a lot. Great value, cracking atmosphere and a spectacular finish line. This was the main event of the EHM running weekend. Race had 10k or Half Marathon options. Registration was easy. Race numbers were sent in the post. Water stations were regular and well stocked. Marshals were brilliant, as always. Course route is on roads and decent paths. There are a few hills in the first 6.5 miles or so. Second half of the race is flat or downhill so it means runners can finish strong. Part of the route also goes through the Warrington rugby ground, which is a nice touch. Finish line is quite stunning with cheering crowds, red carpet and Golden Gate. It really is special - a sight to behold. Finishers received a big solid medal, excellent tech shirt and finishers bag containing bits to eat, energy drinks and water. In 2017 the finish area was a bit messy but that has been corrected- full marks for that. There were also music, stalls, massage tent and race village. The mile race which took place afterwards was perfect for youngsters. This made it a real family occasion. In summary - English Half Marathon is a superb event. Apart from the starting pen issues, it was otherwise flawless. I can't recommend this race highly enough.
