I would definitely recommend the Tallinn Marathon to everyone looking for an early Autumn marathon. It is a superb and unique alternative to Berlin. The field of the marathon was one of the smallest I've been in, but it in no way felt small. It definitely felt like a big city race and was not crowded at all. The entire weekend was about running in Tallinn and the organisation of all the races was fantastic. All the races had the same start and finish line close to Freedom Square. The first race was on Friday afternoon and was the #weruntln Nike sponsored 5k run. It was really good to watch the locals showing off their city. On Saturday morning there were kids fun runs in the park 5 minutes away from Freedom Square. There were different runs for each age group from 2-12 years. The first of the main events was the 10k run on Saturday afternoon. The half and full marathons were on Sunday. The marathon started at 9:00 and the half at 10:45. The marathon course was the most unique course that I've ever run. It went through the city, residential areas, the forest, beach, two parks a couple of out and backs and them headed back to the Old Town. Most of the course was on roads and pavements with a few undulations and a little bit through the forest (16-20km) on trail. There were marshals directing runners throughout the course and spectators cheering. From about 24 to 34km the the half and full runners merged then the courses split with them heading back to the finish while the marathon runners did a long out and back before heading back to the finish. The refreshment stations were well stocked with water and energy drinks (in cups), oranges and energy gels. The finish (41-42.195km) is through the Old Town, with an incline and on a cobbled street. We were given our medals, water, orange juice and a chocolate at the finish. I would definitely recommend everyone take a stab at this marathon. It is unlike any other marathon that I've done in Europe but I loved it. And Tallinn is an amazing city. There are great restaurants, bars and cafes that are worth a visit.
