Wortley Wobbler is a brand new race organised by IT’S GRIM UP NORTH (IGUN).
6pm start might make it difficult for those who are coming from work & maybe a later start might be beneficial for all in the future?
Numbers were collection on the day only. Registration was at Wortley Rugby club was straight forward & hassle free. Toilets were available at the rugby club a few minutes walk from the start. Most IGUN events are chip timed these days but this one was done the old fashioned way.
There were 5 & 10 mile options. I chose the 10. Runners of both distances set off together down a very steep road. The course took runners through stunning woodland & trails before heading down an old railway line via Thurgoland Tunnel. It’s approximately 1000 feet in length but is well lit. At the end of this tunnel the 5 mile runners turned back & 10 mile runners went on, again along the old railway line. The final few miles of the 10 mile course took runners through woodland, fields & winding paths. I knew there had to be a hill at the end & it didn’t disappoint. It was a big one!
Despite the 2 hills, it was still quite a fast course. The scenery is breathtaking.
Finishers of both races received solid medals, beer & chocolate. There was also a spread of home baked biscuits & cakes that were absolutely delicious.
Great fun, friendly race.
