← St illtyds Trail Race

If you like hills, this is the run for you. Many many hills. On the way there, and therefore on the way back as it's an out and back course. This review is for the 50k race (I cant imagine having to do what I did twice to do the 100k, huge kudos to those who did).

Pros (in no particular order

  • Really easy registration process
  • Bargain price
  • Good pre-race briefing.
  • Fabulous, fabulous volunteers at the checkpoints
  • Good variety of food at the checkpoints
  • The finish at the yacht club with the bar (!) was great
  • Really great that the 50k cut off was scrapped because of the hot weather. Very sensible decision.

Cons (in no particular order)

  • Really not the organisers' fault but in some places the marker tape was missing. If I'd have been running on my own, I'd have got lost more than I did! Although they can't help with tape being removed, the signage of the tape could be a little clearer. At one point where we went wrong, there was tape on a post at a junction but it wasn't clear from that tape which way you should go. St Illtyds is a great race for first time ultra runners, but remember that we need signs to be a little more obvious than the more experienced runners.
  • The checkpoints were starting to run out of things by the time we "party at the back" runners were coming through. I recognise that it's difficult to know how much food/drink to get, and how much people will eat/drink.
  • One more checkpoint - or not even a full checkpoint but a drinks station - on the return leg would have been fabulous, especially on a hot day.
  • Fabulous medal and tshirt.

I feel like I've blocked out quite a lot of this race so this review may well be updated!
