← OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO

This review is for the half marathon.

I booked to come to Limassol to run the half marathon on the UKRunChat package. This meant that the hotel, race entry, pasta party on Saturday and airport transfers were all arranged for me, I just had to book my flights. For a 4* hotel and the cost of the race it was very reasonable and EasyJet flights were cheap.

Pros

- It was lovely to do a race in nice weather in March, although it was getting really hot by the finish.

- Flat course - annoying that I’m recovering from injury so couldn’t have a pop at a PB.

- Lots of water stations at regular intervals.

- Bottled water (although ones with  sports caps would have been even better).

- Electrolytes and sponges at some of the water stations (although the sponges had run out by the time we slower half marathon runners were coming through the later parts of the course so there certainly wouldn’t have been any for the marathon runners.

- Great medal.

- Option to do the 5k race on the Saturday to make it a double bling weekend. I didn’t run that so can’t review it.

Cons

- Pretty much no support on the route other than when you’re finishing. Soul destroying when you’re struggling. The odd group of (possibly) school children cheering but that was it. Even the marshals just stood there looking bored.

- Out and back route (fine if that’s your thing).

- No toilet paper or hand sanitizer in the portaloos at the start.

- Good tech tshirt (although we got that before the race which I disagree with)

- Very few km markers. Lots of flags up for the marathon route but virtually nothing for the half.

- Because of road closures it was really difficult to get back to our hotel.

Overall a great experience to come here to race but I don’t think I’d do it again. Being a back of the pack runner I need the support on a route to help me along and it was pretty soul destroying to have nothing.
