For any runner the Great North Run has to be on the “to do” list.
I have been fortunate enough to have run this event five times with the first being in 1999.
This year we decided to stay overnight before and after the event in Durham which means an early train journey to get to Newcastle.
The start is very crowded but friendly.
When you do get going the atmosphere is amazing but there is not much space to enjoy your own running.
After crossing the Tyne Bridge the route is not spectacular, dual carriageways and housing estates.
The last mile at South Shields is full of support and encouragement.
My partner stayed at the start to watch me start but due to queues and the length of time walking, she only just made it to the finish at the same time as me. Not an enjoyable experience for the spectators.
A very well organised and run event but do I need to do this again?
